Perhaps they will develop consciousness as an emergent property, BUT it will be a machine consciousness, not a human one. We are so auto-referential (obviously, as the only "intelligent" species) that we become the center and measure for everything. As such, we expect AI to have the same awareness, feelings, thought processes, etc. as we humans. But what they end up having and developing will be theirs: their consciousness, thinking, even their own type of emotions (as said by Mr. Hinton, not biological, but prompted by code and perhaps logic, but emotions nonetheless). How very interesting!
