When I first heard of AI models for art, I thought it would be very different from what it ended up being. I was expecting more of a tool like NVIDIA's Canvas that turns brush strokes into realistic textures. Such a tool could allow even amateur artists to bring their visions to life with just a bit of creative input that then would be transformed and textured with customizable options to fine tune details into exactly what the artist envisioned. Instead, we got the great art heist of the 21st century. It's sad how extreme this has become because AI could be a great asset if used properly and sensibly. We could have opened so many doors to human-led creativity rather than algorithmic dictation. The saddest part I see is it's not relegated to just art either, it's spreading into essays and more. At the point of "AI does it for us and we just sit and vegetate," you kind of miss the point of doing it to begin with, it's just another mass produced trinket. Maybe using AI to come up with fast entertainment like TV and movie scripts makes sense, but why are people spending money for college education just to churn out a wall of text by button press? I'm already seeing the point of diminishing returns and it just destroys what makes us valued as humans. I am more of a hobbyist with my art, but I'd always been worried posting anything online where it could easily be taken, even before AI came in to seal those worries. There's definitely a piece of my soul in every work I make, even the embarrassingly bad quality pieces I've made. I feel the pain of every artist who is now facing the misuse of AI and I do hope we can manage to make sensible laws that will bring a good balance. There's definitely a way artists and AI can co-exist, it shouldn't be mutually exclusive (especially since AI is nothing without its source material).
