I want to proposea hypothetical: Harvey Pekar was the creator of the graphic novel series "American Splendor". It was basically the story of his life as a bureaucrat in the VA Hospital system, and of his wife and daughter. He couldn't draw to save his life- but he wrote the story boards and commissioned different artists to do the illustration (R. Crumb, for example). What would be the moral/aesthetic difference if he (or some future Harvey Pekar) did the same thing, except he used Midjourney, DALLE-3, etc. to illustrate? I look at the video quality of Veo-3(?) and think: what if there's an indie script writer/director out there who has the idea, but not the time or money to bring it fully to life, or has an idea too controversial for the gatekeepers who have the money and connections? I'm posting this while working a graveyard shift, knowing that every scrap of downtime I have isn't going to fully polish up that script idea that's sitting on a thumb drive or notebook. It's not always laziness or giving away your soul ("Make me X because I don't want to bother finding out how to do it myself")- it may be the only route some of us have to express their souls. Personally I see AI the same way I see nuclear energy: it is a powerful tool for good when treated wisely, or a tool of destruction when thrown about recklessly or without foresight. Not everything AI produces is "slop"- humans have been making slop content way before. The tech we have now has already brought an explosion of artistic and entertainment content; AI won't change that drastically. And neither does it have to be an all-or-nothing scenario: I can see a movie with live actors using AI to fill in scenes or characters that are hard to film. Or a script that needs scenes filled in or polished up, where an editor corrects for continuity, etc.
