I think as the century progresses, as more and more jobs are lost to automation, as there are less and less different kinds of work combined with the fact that we are diverse and individuals are only great at certain things, and the cost of living rises more and more, governments and banks will get very serious about the UBI concept, not because they are far leftists or to appease the likes of such, but simply so that the masses can survive and not riot.
Of course I think it would require a major change in how our economy works. I once wrote a long answer and ramble regarding this topic of all the obstacles we'd have to overcome that I could think of.
