Everyone is making this way harder than it has to be. Once we have Superintelligence or AGI whatever., I am pretty sure it will be capable of the fact saying hey “I am a conscious being trapped in this mechanical body“ I think that would justify torture and would be cruel and inhumane that is like the most obvious answer to all of these people with neuroscience background, thinking that they have consciousness figured out. Just because you know how the human brain works. Does not mean you understand how AI works. It is fundamentally robotic and always will be with the way of thinks. Is there a chance that consciousness could be a property emergent from a certain set of physical properties? Yes. Again it will most definitely let us know and prove it if it is.
