AI is going to disrupt many jobs, not just artists which ironically we all once thought would be the last line of defense against the automation of human jobs. I don't know what to think about using the copyright argument to halter the progress of AI. The underlying neural net architecture was modelled off the human brain and we've trained it with billions of images. That's similar to a human gaining an understanding of what's visually pleasing by looking at art as they grow up. Said human's taste would have been affected by plenty of copyrighted images that they've seen throughout their life. Do we consider that to mean that their memory has been tainted so they should not be allowed to be an artist? Yes, you can argue that the magnitude is different but fundamentally, there's still a double standard.
