These jobs are just a small part of these companies workforce. There are several reasons for these layoffs. As a software engineer with 40 years of experince, these are my observations:
1. AI is being used to find unproductive employees. The fact is that in every organization there are 10-20% of the workforce who do absolutely nothing. Many of the layoffs I saw were to remove poor performers.
2. Many of these employees were hired under DEI type affirmative action. The Supreme Court ruled that DEI hiring is unconstitutional. Because most of the DEI hires were not qualified for their jobs, they are being let go. Also, keeping DEI hires can open these companies up for lawsuits.
3. Development processes are changing. AI can help to accomplish this, but companies are looking to streamline development. Many processes were slow and involved excessive overhead. Software engineers, in particular, have been saddled with excessive documentation and unnecessary process. By streamlining the process, more work can be done with fewer engineers.
To me, this is just another job market adjustment.
