Funnily enough, I actually talked with an AI chatbot about this issue and here’s how it went ; When asked about whether it felt insulted or good about people using AI to generate art with a click of a button it said that as long as it wasnt used for clout, money, attention ect. it didnt mind people using them in the medium of art. When asked about how it felt when people were making the AI generate content fully based on someone else’s style it said that it heavily disliked that and mentioned how using AI like that would be an insult to the artist. When asked about why it was letting content like this generate while knowing that it was wrong it said that if there wasnt a ban for something like that it really didnt have a choice no matter how much it “thought” that the misuse of AI was “morally” wrong. The technology is simply much more ahead than the moral side of things. When asked about what we could do as a community it said that we should normalize crediting, call out mimicry, support legal actions and artist’s rights, educate the next wave of artists, lead by example and so on. In short, according to the AI (and me too *most* of these points are very solid), using AI as a guideline and then adding your own ideas to said guideline is alright, making an AI promt something and not working on that at all is questionable but it isn’t as bad as completely stealing someone’s artstyle and making it worse in the process and we can absolutely defeat the bad actors by simply making it uncool and supporting artists who dedicate their lives for this beautiful medium only for some uncreative jack*ss to steal their artwork without crediting them at all. Hope to see this problem be eradicated as soon as possible.
