Retired people are faced with what to do with their spare time and adapt very well. They pursue hobbies, paint murals, run community art societies and galleries, make gardens, travel, engage in sports, volunteer to help others as carers, providing meals and assisted transport to the sick, elderly and disabled, they do environmental good, planting trees, collecting rubbish, helping wildlife. There are plenty of ways in which people and the planet need people. At present they largely take the form of unpaid work but they could be our new employment options and be much more enjoyable than the drudgery people experience in computer driven workplaces now. Those jibs can be left to AI. And we might only choose to do these jobs a couple of days a week giving us the free time to pursue hobbies of our own. The imagination boggles at the wonderful direction this could take if only those in power are prepared to let it be so. Even the billionaires need us to need them.
