Since when doesn't innovation ruin jobs for those in the older tech being replaced? Computers removed millions of jobs that a simple software program could do not only better but far faster with less mistakes as Humans are useless during times of stress, like break ups, pregnancies and a new born, money problems and all sorts of other problems Humans get affected by that can cause a lack of concentration.
Let alone drugs and alcohol.
Look back a few years before plastics and we had a huge Hemp Industry, employing millions of people around the world, along comes plastics and bingo, when was the last time you saw a Hemp product, except in the new age stores maybe :), how about when was the last time you saw people driving about in a Buggy or Carriage, the Automobile removed all the people that were working in that field and employed less in the automobile Industry that also lost more and more jobs over time as automation improved.
Automation then removed millions of jobs, if you now look at a Sorting facility or even many or most warehouses, they are automated not just for quicker turn around, but less mistakes and far more cost effective.
Now we enter the A.I era and not only will it remove every job in the next ten years, but not create one single job a Human could do, whether enhanced with a chip in their brain or what ever other options they invent to make us more efficient, considering an A.I will learn hundreds of times faster than any Human ever could hope or dream to do.
In fact, the majority of students these days don't even use their own brains to do assignments, they instead use A.I.
Go to a local store where a person under 30 is working and they need to use a calculator or the cash register to work out the change, they can no longer do things in their heads, they use the minicomputer in their hands or the device on the counter and look at people near my age with amazement when we can add or subtract in our heads.
No one except those affected by the job loss ever gave two hoots, but once it gets to the tipping point where A.I has removed a certain number of jobs, the Government will have to take notice as it can't run on 75% or less of the amount, they get from taxpayers.
The problem is that overnight or at most two weeks can eliminate every single job where people are now employed in an Office.
Once you get your two weeks notice email, or as was done in a few of the factories I helped to close down, you would be met at the gate by a security team and be handed your last two weeks pay and told your job no longer exists and not even a thank you :).
Some of the factories I helped to consolidate had many thousands of employees that had no clue what was happening, and even when I told the few that I liked, they wouldn't believe me as they couldn't understand how a larger more automated factory in another state could manufacture as much or more and still keep the item at the same price considering it now had to be transported around the country.
Automation, even if it only removes one Human job will save that one persons salary as well as all the other things a Human needs to be able to work, for every Office role removed, it saves the desk space, the computer/mouse/keyboard/chair/air conditioning, toilet facilities stay cleaner as does the kitchen lunch room areas, less power required by the air con as well as lighting.
One Human at a job where their cost is a lousy $50,000 a year, is still half a million dollars in ten years, remove only ten people with a similar role and it's half a million a year, considering I was doing work at an Insurance Company a few years back and they had around 500 employees at that location, if they removed all of them with A.I, they still had all their other locations that could handle any growing pains as the A.I was implemented and updated over time, each of those 500 people was earning at least $50,000 which doesn't account for the building costs nor all the features Humans require and so just one branch shut down would save $25,000,000 a year, that isn't chump change and that is every year on, with no worries about pay rises, the building cost would also save them a ton of money and if they owned the building, they could now sell it or repurpose it into apartments or lease it out for whatever.
Anyone that has ever run their own business and employed people, will understand why Automation and A.I would be so attractive to them as employees are assholes for the most part and if you run a business that has time restrictions, good luck with that lol as people will take time off at the worst possible time, ask them to please not take any time off till x project is finished please and half your workforce will become sick any sports final and good luck getting everyone at work that day or the next depending what time it was on, then you have the assholes that hurt themselves on the week end and go to work on the Monday and pretend they hurt themselves at work, I am so glad that I retired ten years ago and no longer have to put up with employees as these days they are even worse than they were a decade ago lol.
