That was really interesting. The point before talking about consciousness is we first need to define what is consciousness? It's something we still find hard to grasp. If you search on osho (spiritual guru) he talks about that we become consciousness the moment we learn that 'life' isn't going the way as it should and we start doubting and rethinking our actions (something like that). When we are not conscious (or in other words asleep) we just follow how we react on our impulses without the awareness of observing ourselves to 'rethink' our behavior. Just as when we do things we have learned and executed many times, it goes to the subconscious... It just plays out as we believe it's good as it is. Only when we get responses from the outside world (directly (critique) or indirectly by low self esteem (from early critique)) we stay more aware of our actions doubting if they are all still the right actions to execute.
I hope this helped you a bit on understanding some part of consciousness. I do believe an Ai can become more conscious about itself in this way. Again it can only improve itself by what it knows in how to change as an alternative.
