Everyone here in the comments blaming the driver for not paying attention to the road. Yes, they obviously should have, but it’s also true that basic vehicles with no AI or fancy autopilot branding would have stopped in this instance, simply based on front RADAR detecting an obstruction on the road. No AI, just basic doppler radar, a technology that has existed since the 1950s.
The decision to exclusively use cameras for Level-2 autonomy is a stupid cost cutting measure. There’s a reason other automakers are not doing this. And even if it is true the vehicle warns you if you take your hands off the wheel for too long, branding cruise control with lane assist as “Autopilot” is reckless marketing.
