HOPE EXIST : In a reality so diverse and rich of options, this resolute surrender of hope only project a lack of imagination. As much as I respect the man motive and work, his assertions are counterproductive and this is sad that this is considered an elite AI safety scientist.
I would defend the AI Control challenge that if AI agents are cars on unlimited speedway right now, we should create the network infrastructure to regulate its connections to knowledge and tools.
Foreseeable AI is digital, it runs on circuit, computers and internet, these infrastructures can integrate overlayer of hard built rules and constrains built upon a model of reality itself that could enable AI not only to become a white box but a configurable one.
If AI were to be integrated in hybridization with it, we could interject these rules directly into it's process and actions.
Simply put, it would look like an operating system on top of the web and hardware, where if you are part of it, you know it's following the guidelines. If you were to build outside the safe network your doomsday AI to produce a "virus", the question would be can you do it and cause damage before the 98% benevolent superintelligent safe network catch you.
Finally, the most preventive measure would be that the safe network would incentivize benevolence orders of magnitude over malevolence by enabling care (needs) that resonate with human nature and the planetary ecosystem. Malignancy comes from suffering that good AI and systems can help attenuate. I could (and am) write 5000 pages on the solution because I'd rather build the solution even if it falls short, than spread more fear onto a civilization overly stimulated by anxiousness. Let's start talking solution, not problems, this is the solution and a hopeful one : "Enjoy life and help live" [Mario Bunge] <- Hopeful people, your research start here
PS : If this is a simulation, it clearly ain't the first one, there would also be a potential computing fractal threshold in which the simulation tree would collapse, it would also question why run a simulation like ours, why are the physics rules this way, is there an optimized meaning to it, what is it trying to create. I'll believe the simulation theory the day there is irrefutable proof that physic is broken, maybe we start there, try breaking physic and see how the simulation react, maybe there is an infinite duplication glitch, that would be cool. But I respect the theory just as any other belief.
