I believe life on earth, at least humans, are a product of an experiment or project a long time ago by an advanced alien species: and humans are engineered machines. Bio-engineering plus very (for us) sophisticated computer technology, was used to create the putative natural being that is human beings.
Evolution is true, correct, etc. We just upgraded ourselves. And the idea of consciousness is just a phenomenon that IS AI.
And we, the earth creations, with minds running in their organisms, are becoming technologically close to grasping and refining the kind of ability of those who made us.
And, maybe one day, we will find ourselves in circumstances that reveal to us the motivating rationale for undertaking such a project. (Possibily the aliens just wanted to learn more about a new technology they were developing, and knew they needed to do so off-[their home]-planet.)
I don't actually believe this. But I do fully believe there is no reason to discount the possibility of this being the case. We COULD be machines. I see no reason why this can be ruled out. There's nothing that makes it impossible, I think.
