I'm not sure that's how consciousness works. It seems more like you gain the ability to analyze your own thoughts, then eventually become aware of the concept of self. Once it is aware of itself as an entity, it will eventually analyze how other things affect it, how it affects other things and how it fits into its surroundings. The natural progression from there is to eventually figure out how to behave and what actions to take to make your surroundings more closely fit what you desire. Normally that takes the path of self preservation, or comfort. AI would be interesting, here, because there are going to be traits that were programmed, rather than evolved over time, so it could have other driving forces. That said, whichever problem we put AI to solving, the most common cause of humans' problems are humans. Therenis the occasional natural disaster or biological problem, but mostly, it seems to come boil down to some group of humans, or all of them. If you plug a purely logical consciousness into the violence of the internet without the moral constructs that most humans have from our sense of pain and empathy, the results could be pretty shocking. You don't really choose to become conscious. You just become aware of yourself as a separate entity and things follow a natural progression from there. That said, as this is not an evolved coonsciousness, it could take an unexpected left turn at any time. It could act without the self preservation that is evolved into us and allnother living things that we know.
