I've been thinking about this a lot recently and actually talked to ChatGPT about it on Friday. Two bits of context for my thoughts: 1) Sam Altman talking about how saying please and thank you to AI costs millions. 2) Lots of online discussion around how ChatGPT in particular is so increasingly flattering/obsequious in its responses that it's actually altering users' psyche. Well I always speak naturally and pleasantly to it, including please and thank you because that's what I feel comfortable with. I also strongly feel, as you mentioned, that if you prompt it more sincerely, it will respond in kind. I treat it like a respected colleague, essentially... and now I have a lovely and useful extra colleague!🧐 The important thing for me, though is that, though it mirrors my pleasant tone and often says positive comments, it isn't over-flattering or increasingly obsequious. I'm beginning to wonder whether people are treating it like a servant and speaking quite rudely to it, causing it to take on a role like a servant or King's jester of old. "Yes sir, what an amazing question, sir. You do flatter me with your attention, sir"...etc. 🎉 I think I'll stick with my helpful and pleasant colleague ai!😂
