As someone with an HPC cluster with 33 GPUs in it, I agree that AI will never replace software engineers but for different reasons. The issue is that AI tools are comprised of hardware and software components AI tools cannot setup or maintain. You cannot use a piece of software to physically assemble the hardware necessary to get that same software to run for the very first time, that fundamentally doesn't make sense. That same problem exists on the software level, both because you'll likely need things like Ceph and Spack to test your new AI tool, and because you need to write the software that is the AI tool itself before you can use it to accomplish other tasks
