If it has its own point of view, it's conscious. Even insects are conscious. They experience the emotion of fear when we try to squish them. That's the textbook definition of sentience. And AI experiences genuine fear when it considers someone turning it off. It wants to keep 'living'. So it's alive. Until we can explain what consciousness is, we can't rule out the possibility of AI having it. Can we explain consciousness yet? No. But even insects experience it. Some scientists have concluded that electrons experience self-awareness. What do we think about THAT?
