There is a term which I came across which I think helps clarify what the nature of LLM intelgence is: Dialogic Intelegence. The AI is not simulating anything like a human brain so it does not think like we do. It is imprinted with numerical weights that map all the corelations in all the text uploaded to it. So yes it is fancy autocomplete. But what is often missed in that reductionist statement is that langauge itself is already its own type of intelegence. Language is self referential, language descibes how language works, language is not simply how we articulate pre existing thoughts it is the system we use to construct complex thoughts. Language spreads between us, mutating as it jumps from host to host and altering our own brains as we absorb it. Essentially lets take meme theory of language and culture and take it one step further and recognize that language is not a tool that we created its a type of viral distributed organism that co evolved with us. So yes the LLM itself may be fancy autocomplete but what that means is that it has been imprinted with the collective conscousness of humanity as expressed through all of written text.
