I think that it is critical for people to understand that Tesla, especially by the mouth of Elon Musk, but also on their marketing material, have been overpromissing and underdlivering Autopilot / FSD (Full Self Driving) for years now. To be honest, I think both Regulators, and the Federal Government as a whole, have been too permissive because they have been sold, or forced, on the belief that this technology will bring the USA to the forefront of the Automotive industry. Possibly, feeding many of the images it gathers all over the World, including China, to the Federal Government - e.g., CIA. This has (a) resulted in several critical accidents all over the World, and (b) discourage investments on LIDAR, which is a critical component to actually full self driving, i.e., a trully high level self driving system. Do you want more proof? On the Tesla Model 3 Highland, Tesla and Elon Musk ditched the traditional (ultrasonic) parking sensors, relying solely and totally on the cameras. This move resulted in several errors while parking, or leaving too much slack on parking. Such incidents are not major, but it reflects a mentality of cost-cutting, regardless of the customer experience. Do you imagine it is different on the Autopilot / FSD? By the way: Tesla was NOT founded by Elon Musk. Elon Musk invested on Tesla, while they where developing the original Tesla Roadster, and then made some maneuvers to ditch the two original founders. Also, Elon Musk now ignores the original Tesla Roadster - letting customers without proper support.
