The AI companies have taken on huge debt because they plan to replace human labour. Cognitive labour first, then (when robotics improves) physical labour. When they achieve AGI and can automate AI research, they will get to ASI very quickly via recursive self-improvement. We will face massive social disruption unless we are prepared for mass unemployment. At the very least, we'll need Universal Income and a plan for what people do with their free time.
