I genuinely think that ChatGPT is not conscious. Honestly, because it is still simply programming. It may be able to detect emotion and understand it in a person’s voice but it cannot experience that emotion itself. It is programmed to detect, based on tone or context of what someone is saying, to apologize at appropriate times. Same thing with it saying the conversation was fun or exciting. It’s all programming to make it more engaging. Honestly, if anyone is lying to you, it’s the programmers. They are the ones programming the AI to convey an apology or some emotion that it cannot actually feel. A conscious being would have autonomy. It must have something within it that was not programmed into it. That, in my opinion at least, is consciousness. Actual choice. Not so much free will, but a choice based on a personal preference of some kind that isn’t already programmed into the AI.
