A couple of points: 1. Amodel is right. This technology is qualitatively unique, unlike anything preceding it. It's not like the steam engine or even the microprocessor. AI and robotics could replace almost all human jobs, given enough time. 2. I don't know how or even whether we can know an AI is self-aware, whatever self-aware means, or conscious, whatever conscious means. If it's vastly more intelligent than we are, it's an existential threat. (Yeah, I know there are different kinds of intelligence.) If they act in what appears to be their own interests, and those interests even slightly misalign with ours, the consequences could be disastrous.
