I highly recommend Empire of AI by Karen Hao—it gives me the words to articulately reply here—I think it’s pretty implausible that non-symbolic models like ChatGPT are a constituent component of any potential future AGI.
What they are EXCELLENT at is selling investors—and to a lesser extent consumers—on the hollow promise of a workforce that lacks the human capacity for pushback on their work or the conditions in which they perform it. It’s a con that works because of how ravenous venture capital is to maximally exploit workers
