The biggest hurdle is the demand side. If most companies automate ,even 75%, they risk shrinking their own customer base. Mass job cuts mean less disposable income and weaker sales. Where do buyers come from? UBI gets floated as a fix, but at politically realistic levels it probably won’t sustain middle-class consumption. Meanwhile, the tax base erodes (less payroll/income tax), pushing governments to chase revenue from “robot labor.” But what even counts as a taxable AI worker, a model, a workflow, a robot arm? That definitional mess becomes a policy quagmire. Bottom line: the economics, public finances, and regulatory definitions are deeply entangled, hurdles many rosy automation forecasts underplay.
