I'm sorry, but I'll never understand all this simping I see for copyright law in these comments. I 100% agree that uncrediting artists for their work is unethical. But stuff like the Ghibli debacle makes me feel like y'all expect everyone who wants to replicate the Ghibli style (even without AI) needs to get permission or something. Copyright law is disgusting and shouldn't be defended as a good thing. Remember Napster?
And to be frank, AI isn't the problem: capitalism is. If none of these artists NEEDED to stay unreplaced in order to keep bread on the table, we wouldn't be having this discussion. If everyone already had enough and didn't need to slave away for cash, nobody would be scared on an existential level of being "replaced" by AI. It screams Luddite (and yes, I know the real Luddites are grossly misrepresented and simplified, I'm just using the term as is popularly understood, ie., technophobes).
The Luddites are often said to have gotten upset at their tailor businesses being replaced by factories. The factories could produce clothes faster and cheaper and more plentiful than the slow handmade works of the Luddites. So, they smashed the machines and burned the factories down.
If the Luddites hadn't needed to depend on their skills remaining relevant and non-obsolete, if they'd been properly compensated and cared for after being outdone by the machines, they wouldn't have gone to the extremes that they did. So the real issue is workers (not just artists, but all workers) not being compensated for after being replaced by automation. If dishwashing robots are invented and prove much better at the job than me, I'm out of a job. And there's nothing inherently wrong with that, so long as I'm not left out to dry. Sadly, I dunno if the government (especially the current American administration) is interested in making sure folks like me are properly taken care of in such a situation.
We only think in extremes. Either all progress must be stopped so we can keep our jobs, or all of us must be entirely replaced and left to rot without support. Nobody wants to compromise and find an in-between.
And remember, new tech replacing old tech and decimating entire employment sectors is nothing new. Netflix killed Blockbuster (again, a simplification, but Netflix was a major final nail in Blockbusters coffin):
"Streaming is really convenient! I can watch a movie without having to go out and rent a DVD!"
*meanwhile, at the rental: "Sorry folks, we're shutting down because we just can't compete with streaming!"
Also, ice used to be delivered by truck. The truckers tried to get refrigerators BANNED because they posed a threat to their livelihoods. This has always happened throughout history with new tech, and will continue to happen. You aren't about to teach people how to make clothes by hand or throw away your fridge just to give people a job, are you?
On a final note, for what it's worth, I do believe that jobs like mine SHOULD be replaced. Specifically so I can focus on things that enrich my soul. In other words, AI should wash my dishes first and maybe generate some art for me second (if I can't make it myself or find anybody to make it for me). Instead, it's being used to replace artists first and I'm still left here washing dishes...
