This old gentleman seems smart and quite nice, but he is dead wrong about some things. It is socialist claptrap that better societies have smaller distance between rich and poor and worse societies have greater distance between rich and poor. Countries like North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela have least distance between rich and poor. This is accomplished by the government squashing initiative and taking what everyone has and redistributing it. If you make everyone equally miserable, the distance between top and bottom can be completely eliminated. Countries with the greatest individual freedom also have the greatest prosperity and also have the greatest distance between rich and poor. But "poor" in those countries is relative. The lowest quintile of income earners in the US, UK, Australia etc, still have a job, a home with running hot water, a television, a smartphone, and other things that would be luxuries even for the highest quintile in North Korea, Cuba, or Venezuela (excluding the elite ruling class). Distance between rich and poor says nothing whatsoever about absolute poverty. If Elon Musk makes a billion more dollars today, you and I aren't one penny poorer for it. That's not how money works.
