I think you're forgetting one important aspect of why many AI researchers don't pay any attention to the moral problem of copying artists' styles: they don't really care. You, as an artist, see these models as "art generators", because that's your domain, that's what you do. Making art is your job, your passion, and you see these models as something that tries to imitate your work. But the AI researchers don't see it that way, after all, generating art images is not the only thing those models can do, you can ask for any image. They see it as technical challenge, to make a model as good as they're capable of. That can be evaluated using many different techniques and benchmarks, and they're focused on optimizing for them. They don't really see those models as "art genrrators", they see them as products of their own research, just the results of their work and ingenuity. They might not even think about the potential uses/misuses of the models, they see it just a technical challenge to overcome. The term " technical arms race" is quite appropriate here.
