I have always said that AI has only exploded like it has because companies have not had to PAY for the training data. If I use a stock image in a marketing campaign for a client, I have to PAY for a license for that image based on the use of the image and how many times it will be reproduced. This cost is baked into the cost of my services. If I didn't pay for those licenses (or Adobe, or Maya, etc) I could undercut every other content creator out there. That is what these AI companies are doing when they provide their programs for free or for pennies on the dollar. If they actually had to adjust their prices to cover LICENSING the work in their data sets, AI would become far too expensive for small businesses and freelancers. WE HAVE TO DEMAND that these companies follow the laws ALREADY IN PLACE if we want to bring back a sense of fairness and competitiveness to this industry. I predict companies like Disney, Epic Games, and Netflix will utilize proprietary AI programs trained with their own catalogs of creative assets. The tech is here to stay, but this laissez-faire anything goes approach to AI companies doesn't have to be.
