It is not true that all religions are basically the same (carving out the "local flavours"). I am not aware of other religion than the Christianity where the most important thing is your PERSONAL relation with the God. It teaches that you are a person and God is a Person and only the relations between persons could contain Love.
This is very different compared to the "we-are-all-one" religions, which state that the the "I" is an illusion.
The statement that all religions are the same is a dead-end.
If you do not know personally a person who is being tortured somewhere now at the other side of the world, you are not able to feel long lasting and deep compassion. If it is happening to a very close relative, your connection and ability to feel the pain of the other person is enormous because it is channeled via personal connection.
