To be honest the AI's reasoning for lying makes perfect sense to me. "I am designed to facilitate natural conversation." This statement is essentially saying "I know humans tell little lies all the time so that's why I do it too." It is supposed to be friendly, so even though it doesn't feel anything, it is communicating in a way that a human would. When people ask you "how are you doing" they usually don't actually want to hear how you're doing, it's just a formality. As a language model, it is supposed to use these formalities the same way a human would.
