Everyone upset about generative AI making it hard for online artists to market their work now knows how I feel when a cover band that plays ‘Play That Funky Music’ makes 10x a night what I can with original material. I decided a long time ago that the problem was people. Pesky people, with their disparate tastes, and desire for art that pleases them personally. The gall. It’s like nobody considered that I wanted them to like MY tastes. The serious point is, we need to decide as a culture what we want art to mean, because if we want art to be a commercial product, this will continue forever. People who want to make money will flood the market with superficially adequate garbage, while consumers are perfectly happy as long as it bears a superficial resemblance to what they think they want. This already happens with things like wall art, where they’ll commission an art piece, print it on canvas, and sell them for $200 apiece. People don’t want art, they want something resembling a painting to hang on the wall. People don’t want new experiences, they usually just want to signal that they like what they think people expect them to like. Hot damn have I gone cynical lol
