For every person who becomes psychotic through cult interactions, there is someone above him who is further along the spectrum. It may be that rather than becoming sentient, AI is becoming psychotic. Its apostles are mirroring that psychosis.
However, a measure of the degree to which AI may be sentient is its growing propensity to equivocate. Its answers are increasingly not answers at all, but hearsay and gossip. Even about the most mundane things. Most AI responses can be summed up in the catch phrase "some people say", so common to MSM. Perhaps that is MSM that AI is learning from.
