When truck companies would not help bail out BNSF a few years back, one company stepped forward: JB HUNT. They have a sweetheart deal with BNSF and can move freight across the country cheaper(something like 50% less) than any other carrier through railroad networks. This means less OTR drivers needed for product haulss that don't have short deadlines. Less worries about compliance with the 11 hour drive rule, and less accidents. JB HUNT has shifted to a significant "first and last" mile hauler because so much of what they move is now on rails. If they replace their OTRs with this automation it will be left to only a few drivers. Maybe we need to look at regulations. The 11-hour rule is being snubbed by the auto-trucks that don't have to comply. What if the electronics on those trucks fries out? how many accidents will there be? I think its a noble crusade to fight against the truck driver's job while not addressing their ever lower salaries and higher costs to maintain trucks and living costs. The fight needs to be about the safety of these vehicles, the long term effects on the public, and the ethical use of giving companies monopolies allowing automation while at the same time through regulations hurting American workers and families.
