I’m so struck, because yes, AI / robots as we know them are tools of white supremacy that are used to exacerbate social inequalities at every level (from construction to deployment). But sci-fi was never about REAL tech. The whole point of media depictions of AI/Robots is that this technology does not exist, and the author is using their social contexts to imagining how developing technologies might affect us. That means fictional AI / robots are racialized, yes, but it doesn’t mean the author literally thinks that robots will be marginalized in the future. Rather robots work as symbolic doubles for marginalized folks, and help us think about how developing technologies contribute to the marginalizations that authors imagine. I just get so frustrated when people forget about metaphors in SF. Just because it’s futuristic doesn’t mean it’s predictive.
