LLMs are a complicated thesaurus. When you look up something complicated you find a complicated response.
Imagine the LLM as a Cloud of informational tidbits, your input is used to create directions how to enter into the cloud and get to a specific point within it.
By using polite phrasing you are accessing the polite areas in the cloud. What you describe as "roleplaying" is merely a consequence of this. By framing a question like that you make it access a different part of the cloud of information.
