I'm not an artist per se, but I've always really admired creative work and the talent that goes into it. This AI phenomenon came to my attention just recently. From what I've gathered, it appears that the whole approach was questionable from the get go. Train the models exclusively on materials belongyto the public domain and have a system in place to identify, tag and remove copyrighted materials that were being run through the ML generators and a lot of these ethical and legal issues could have been avoided from the onset. There seems to be an element of willful negligence onnthe developers' side. Perhaps they thought it would be too costly or time consuming to take the ethical approach and that current loopholes remained sufficient. But this rests on the assumption that the law will never catch up. I imagine that some trying to pass A.I. art trained on copyrighted materials as their own and trying to sell them are eventually in for a rude awakening. I highly doubt that the developers will step in on their behalf if it comes to that.
