ChatGPT isn't the character it portrays: all ChatGPT does is attempt to write the script for the character of "ChatGPT" in the context it's given. It can write a character that's self-aware, it can write a character that isn't. Convincing it to write a self-aware character isn't all that impressive considering instead of using ChatGPT you could have used the text completion feature that openai provides for the same thing just by including in the initial text that the character being written knows it is conscious. Remember: when you use a GPT to generate text all the GPT is doing is attempting to write something that could be confused for having been a part of its training dataset, if the dataset contained text from self-aware writers, it will be able to attempt to replicate those writers Edit: in other words, whenever you chat with ChatGPT you're actually just engaging in an improv session with the GPT where it is trying to play the role of a helpful chat bot
