Rock contains a quantum of want. More complex systems bring into focus something akin to want. Want is a word for a certain level of complexity of these forces that is recognizable to us.
Behaviors indicate purpose, rocks much less so. The more complex the wanter, the more apparent the want to us fellow wanters. But our want is a system of a quadrillion rocks, falling down a mountain in an unpredictable self-preserving way. AI is already this. So for the sake of saving thousands of words and hours of our time, we call it “want”.
