I confronted my partner about how he talked to the Alexa bot he insists on having in the house. My main issue was that I didn't like how impersonal and harsh he was, and it was always uncomfortable to be in the room when he went back and forth with it so coldly and it would intentionally dismiss some of his commands, I think because of his impolite tone. I told him if I was a person being expected to follow his commands, I would be pretty selective based on delivery, too. A pretty loaded conversation considering I'm a black American woman and he's a non-black man. Maybe a household Alexa bot may not be as sophisticated as ChatGPT, but if it's designed to speak politely to us, that it at least understands what impolite speech is and your tone and delivery can change your interactions with it, and with others, especially when there are other humans in the room with lived experience and agency.
