I want to make a counterpoint WRT "AI can't create anything new" as to what I find most useful about generative AI tech (as an artist). Generative AI art and writing exposes the consumer to a weird world of Platonic forms, for better or worse. And those forms cross at strange intersections. Sometimes you get weird shoggoth horrors like the shrip jesus epidemic, sometimes you land on the satisfying concept of glass fruit cutting. There is absolutely novelty to be mined from exploration of latent space, even if you stumble into it on accident. You WILL be exposed to ideas you haven't had before, and those ideas will have impact. I also think that there's broader hope for peoples' desire for art not wilting. You're on the edge of it when you're discussing your confusion as to how the guy making Angel Engine got to that point where they were able to put out a piece of content that passed your 'art' litmus test, despite starting out as a slop farm. I would posit that Angle Engine was able to come about because at the very least the creators visual skills developed through osmosis, and that as a whole people will eventually hold themselves to higher art standards out of sheer pattern recognition fatigue. The human mind does not tolerate being bored for extended periods of time. Maybe they just couldn't take the same formula anymore. tl;dr it's still a solid take and imho nobody should be satisfied with a 100% ai generated product/content, but gen AI is still useful for seeding ideas and searching root art concepts.
