If not for the underhanded and likely illegal use of vast quantities of training data, AI art wouldn't *inherently* be a bad thing. Generative AI is simply a tool that obfuscates the skills of whoever uses it. It's the equivalent of paying someone on Fiver to make you something, only that someone is a corporately owned black-box product. There can certainly be creativity from the user in directing the AI, but any talent involved is very divorced from the end results. The image generated by "Image of a rabbit in boots" holds nearly the same weight as one from a prompt detailing every minute detail.
The real problem is in how these products were trained, with vast quantities of data scraped off the open web. All content created by generative AI needs to be considered derviative of the training data, meaning the training data needs to be licensed. Unless, of course, we're ready to call AI sentient and deserving of rights, which opens an entirely new can of unprofitable worms for the companies making them.
