To be fair to the interviewer, I don't think Sir Penrose explained this in simple terms. He was speaking as if his audience had already read his thesis. It would have been more layman-friendly if he had simply said something like: 'AI accepts its data is true without having the capacity to question the data or coming up with and considering extraordinary concepts' - which is what inteligence does. AI has no reason to think outside of the box.
