What are economies for? The novelist’s “nationalization” argument is interesting precisely because it follows the logic to an uncomfortable place: if the corpus of human creativity was treated as a commons to be harvested, perhaps the outputs should be treated as a public good too.
Generative AI is, in a real sense, a compression of human creative history. What happens when the upstream source dries up because we’ve eliminated the economic conditions that sustained it? The model can remix what exists. It cannot replace the well.
