I don't find any of this convincing. True human-level AI has been "five years away" since literally the mid 1960s, the LISP machine era. Meanwhile an entire economy of AI tech bro CEO grifters are all floundering for VC capital, or they've left their companies to scrounge for clout, and the only solution is to give more money to the companies we've given so much money because oh no we made the computers too good. Too many self-serving interests, to many non-experts and grifters overhyping (to an extreme degree) what's available now. I think we're going to find out, again and again, the thing we've consistently learned in the past: our model for "consciousness" is hemmed in by our analogies and metaphors, and we don't understand much more about it than we ever have. I for one doubt our robot overlords will ever exist. But most of these AI companies need to be shut down because it's an atrocious amount of waste for things which are, and will continue to be, of little value to the average person whose governments keep shovelling money and tax abatements at these grifters.
