To play a bit of devils advocate, in response to "the vast majority of people want to be productive members of society and contribute to their communities. What happens when that vital aspect is removed from our lives?"
People likely said the same thing about the combine harvester, before which the vast majority of people were farmers, and after which most went on to build and do other things, finding other professions and forging new ways to live. I know it's scary to think the jobs, roles and purpose we know now might just be disappearing, but perhaps in hindsight in a decade or two we'll see AI and automation akin to the combine harvester and we'll have largely found other productive things to do that give our life purpose and that sense of belonging.
