I work for UPS. The 48,000 firings have already happened. UPS reported them in tax filings. There will undoubtedly be more going forward, but those have happened already. And, they had nothing to do with AI. UPS's plans for mass firings and facility closures were in the works prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID delayed those plans, because the pandemic created an incentive to hire lots of people and move as much volume as possible. But that was a temporary respite. UPS is a profitable company. They are not losing money. However, they are not profitable ENOUGH to please big shareholders. People who see UPS as a shipping company primarily devoted to serving customers are mistaken. UPS is just a financial instrument, a mechanism for funneling profits to shareholders. UPS shareholders don't care if UPS is shipping packages, grooming dogs, or rolling cigars. They just care about getting paid. Customers matter, but only as a source of revenue. UPS cares FAR more about pleasing shareholders than about pleasing customers. UPS CEO Carol Tome wants to shrink UPS. She wants to make it a smaller company that moves products with higher margins. She wants fewer workers, fewer facilities, and fewer vehicles. And she wants to move for more profitable merchandise. This plan, if successful, will shrink UPS's footprint and probably serve less customers. But if the shareholders make money, that is all that matters. None of that has anything to do with AI.
