AI is a machine, but everything is. Humans are too. Rocks as well. Anything that exists is basically a material machine controlled in real-time by the laws of Universe.
There is no soul. There is no free will. There is is an illusion of time and of conciousness for everything that interacts and thus exists, though.
Asking "Is AI sentient? Does it have conciouness?" makes no sense in that regard. It does, like we do. Or it does not, like we do not. Whatever you want to take as a definition.
