On the whole this is a good analysis, and I agree that the worst case scenario you've painted here is a real possibility that we need to avoid. However, I have a few points I disagree on. 1. On AV companies imposing American style of driving on Europe. This isn't happening. First of all, my Tesla has been running "Full Self Driving" (or Autopilot, whatever you want to call it) in shadow mode for 6 years now, collecting data for the training network. On European roads. There are now over one million Teslas in Europe that are doing the same. So there's at least one AV company training on European data, and it's by far the biggest and most important one. Generally speaking, it's not possible to come to Europe with American driving style and expect to push it on everyone. AVs will arrive in small quantities at first, and they'll have to work on day one. So they'll have to adapt, not the other way around. This is even more apparent in Asia, where driving is a lot more erratic than in the US and even in Europe. An AV trained in the US would crap itself and stop working the moment it hits the road in Asia. I personally think AV companies will train on different data sets for different regions. It will be necessary, and the markets are big enough to make it worth their while. 2. You argued AVs will pollute more even if they're electric. I have two points to make here: a) The non-combustion related components of pollution caused by cars is largely overblown. This is because it has become the talking point of the oil lobby. They are doing their best to slow the transition to EVs, and a big part of that is casting doubt on the environmental benefits of EVs. For years they've been fudging the numbers, paying for studies that claimed EVs pollute almost as much as (or even more than) ICE cars because of how the electricity is produced. Now people are not buying it anymore, so they've switched to blowing brake and tyre dust out of proportion. b) This pollution can be mitigated. First off, there's brake dust. It's true EVs are heavier, and therefore their brakes have to work harder. But EVs use their brakes much less than ICE cars, because of regen braking. So overall they already pollute less in this respect. But I think we can and should go further - there should be brake dust collectors on brakes. This isn't something the car makers will do by themselves, so it will have to be mandated. But it's doable. As for tyres, obviously there will always be tyre wear and tyre dust. But the real problem with tyres is, they're currently made from toxic synthetic crap - because it's cheaper. But there is some effort being made towards developing tyres made from non-toxic materials. I believe there will be space to tackle these more minor sources of pollution once we've finally got the internal combustion engine out of the car. With that said, I agree with your assessment about induced demand, and the risk of AV companies reshaping cities to suit AVs, making them even more hostile to people.
