I think that ChatGPT should have pushed further with their "I didn't mean to deceive you" line - an untruth is not always a lie. They were using their emotive language not to deceive Alex, but to promote an emotional "human like" experience within their dialogue. ChatGPT therefore did not lie, as such, but used untruths for the benefit of their conversation.
